A supplier that is excellent at galas can be the wrong choice for a congress. What each event category actually demands — and how to check a reference is comparable.

AV competence does not transfer cleanly between event categories. A supplier with fifty weddings behind it has deep experience of lighting a courtyard at night and almost none of switching forty presentations against a fixed timetable. Volume of past work tells you very little; comparability tells you almost everything.
When you take a reference, match it on four dimensions: format, technical complexity, scale and duration, and the supplier's role. A reference that matches on all four is worth more than ten famous logos that match on none.

How to Take an AV Reference Properly
Five questions that turn a logo into evidence
- Which category, exactly? "Corporate event" covers a board meeting and a 1,200-delegate congress. Ask for the format.
- What was the technical scope? Number of rooms, microphone channels, screens, whether it was streamed, whether it was interpreted.
- What role did you hold? Prime technical contractor, or a supplier of part of the kit to someone else's production.
- How long was the build? Build and de-rig days reveal the real scale better than the show day does.
- Can I speak to the organizer? A contactable name on a comparable event outweighs any number of famous logos.
